Carmen Africana. Transformations of a European Myth in African Cinema

"Looking at two African Carmen-adaptations - Karmen Geï, a franco-senegalese coproduction, directed by Joseph Geï Ramaka, that came out in 2001; and the South African film U-Carmen e-Kayelitsha, directed by Mark Dornford-Gay, that won the Golden Bear at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival - I will try to show, how they can not only be seen as transformations of one of the most popular European modern myths, but also as attempts to change popular culture in their respective countries of origin, and possibly, even beyond."
