Chancen des Gelächters. Zur Ästhetik und Politik des Humors bei Walter Benjamin
The image of Walter Benjamin as a “melancholic intellectual” has significantly impacted his reception. However, Benjamin’s countless comments on humor, laughing, cheerfulness, wit, and the comic have so far received little attention. In individual portraits of authors such as Paul Scheerbart or Karl Kraus, in his reflections on the child’s perception of the world, the reception of technology, Micky Mouse, or in his self-experiments with hashish, the elements of humor, laughing, cheerfulness, wit, and the comic become essential points of reference. The meaning of these phenomena is reflected in Benjamin’s examinations of different forms of media such as political caricature, illustrated press, radio play, language, child’s play, satire, theater, or film.
The workshop is funded through the Walter Benjamin Prize for Young Researchers and supported by the Walter Benjamin Archive (Berlin), the Leibniz-Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung (Berlin), and the International Walter Benjamin Society.
