Dirk Naguschewski: Systemsprenger in der Post: Wie Correspondence- und Mail-Art Grenzen überwinden
Lecture in the context of the exhibition Like you! Freundschaft digital & analog (27 Sep 2019–05 Jul 2020) at the Museum für Kommunikation Berlin
When artists in the 1960s started sending their artist friends creatively designed cards and letters in the post, they established a new genre of art, which became known as Correspondence Art or Mail Art. Their postal transferences, characterized by the charm of the self-made, were considered as art beyond the established art market and, in times of the cold war, created a global network transcending the boundaries of opposing political systems. The talk traces how gifts exchanged between friends became exhibits in museums and tries to explain their lasting popularity.
In German.
Dirk Naguschewski, a linguist and cultural critic, is head of the ZfL knowledge transfer and communications department.
