Mit Koselleck über Koselleck hinaus. Perspektiven zu einer Begriffsgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts

On the occasion of concept historian Reinhart Koselleck’s 100th birthday, we want to determine the actuality and limits of approaching a social-historical history of concepts in the Basic Concepts in History (Geschichtliche Grundbegriffe) while also exploring the contours and perspectives of a “post-Koselleckian” history of concepts. The historicization of Koselleck’s methodical categories and figures of thought will be connected to questions of the classical basic concepts’ scope, the semantic upheavals and caesuras of the 20th century, new basic concepts and concept types, as well as new heuristic central categories that could be helpful in their analysis. Regarding Koselleck’s approach towards a theory of historical periods, the conference will also analyze the temporal dimensions of newer central concepts. Here, we will follow more recent contributions which argue for a decisive opening and expansion of the history of concepts towards a historical semantics. We will address questions such as the inclusion of iconic semantics, new media, or the history of emotions, questions of the internationalization or globalization of the history of concepts, the importance of transfer and translations, etc. The methodical reflections will be developed in accordance with concrete practical experiences and materials on a history of concepts of the 20th and 21st centuries.
