This book is the first monograph on political theology in Georgia, tracing its development through history. It looks at how Georgian political theology addressed the challenges of a weak state, starting in the Middle Ages with the figure of Saint George, who symbolized both victory and defeat as forms of triumph. The book then examines the crisis in political iconography during the 17th and 18th centuries, followed by the secularization of political theology in the 19th century, encapsulated in the concept of the fatherland. It concludes with an exploration of contemporary state-church relations, focusing on the church’s efforts to enforce its sovereignty against the state.
