Michael Franz is a poet and philosopher specializing in semiotics and antiquity. From 1983 to 1991 he was head of working groups at the Institute for Aesthetics and Arts at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. From 1992 to 1995 he was head of projects at the research focus Literary Studies at the Max Planck Society’s Fördergesellschaft Wissenschaftliche Neuvorhaben. From 1996 to 2003 he was project manager for cultural semiotics at the Zentrum für Literaturforschung Berlin. Franz is co-editor of the journal Weimarer Beiträge.
