With a focus on the lexicon project The 20th Century in Basic Concepts
(Ernst Müller, Barbara Picht and Falko Schmieder)

How do we deal with the German 20th century in terms of conceptual history? A dictionary project which is currently being pursued at the ZfL attempts to answer this question. The dictionary, which stands in the tradition of the historical dictionary Basic Concepts in History associated with Reinhart Koselleck, is currently planned to comprise six volumes with around 150 lemmas. In this special issue, we publish the principles and guidelines of the project—accompanied by comments on its chances and perils, the expected gain, and possible chances for optimization.
