For humans, life, thought and freedom are not self-evident. They are “impossible possibilities” that have to be created again and again in an uninterrupted personal effort. If this effort is not made, we risk repeating the “anthropological catastrophes” of the 20th century. Merab Mamardashvili’s dramatic philosophy sees the appearance of differently coded figures such as Proust or Artaud. Within these figures, his philosophy of consciousness and his understanding of history are being expressed. Mamardashvili always aimed at conveying the act of philosophizing as a task for life, even to those readers who were not philosophically trained.
