Gershom Scholem: Poetica
Schriften zur Literatur, Übersetzungen, Gedichte
[Gershom Scholem: Poetica. Writings on Literature, Translations, Poems]
Far beyond the academic boundaries of Jewish studies, Gershom Scholem’s name is synonymous with the history of Jewish mysticism and Jewish messianism. However, it is less well known that, throughout his life, Scholem dealt extensively with poetry and translations as well as with philological questions of language theory. This edition uncovers the literary side of a well-known scholar of religion. For the first time, this edition grants comprehensive and systematic insight into the work of the writer and translator, the intellectual and critic, and it does so by collecting Scholem’s Poetica in six sections while also providing detailed commentary on every individual text.
In these texts, Gershom Scholem emerges as a dedicated Israeli intellectual who, both analytically and excitedly, engaged in contemporary debates on authors from Israel and the diaspora.
