1923 – Sattelzeit der Revolution. Umbrüche in Politik, Kultur und radikaler Gesellschaftskritik
In 1923, three significant events that were to introduce and shape the “short twentieth century” (Hobsbawm) were to be processed: the horror of the First World War, the triumph of the Russian Revolution, and the failure of revolutionary uprisings in Western Europe and Germany. This processing led to a paradigm shift in social criticism and gave rise to Critical Theory and Western Marxism. At the same time, the year 1923 marked both the ultimate end of these revolutionary uprisings as well as the beginning of Stalinization in the USSR, but also within the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) as well as the rise of fascism.
The term “Sattelzeit” captures a re-orientation in theory and practice which is reflected in influential texts, new political concepts, as well as in the respective protagonists’ biographies. This “Sattelzeit” can be traced to the New Left of the 1960s.
