Schreibarten im Umbruch. Stildiskurse im 18. Jahrhundert
The starting point of the conference is the observation that we can identify a readjustment of the category of style in the thinking on the modes and styles of writing during the 18th century. Around 1750, style is extracted from the rhetorical system and expanded into an ambiguous concept. The previous schematic distinction between genus sublime, genus mediocre and genus humile is replaced by an identification of naïve and facetious (fr. naïf, gracieux), humorous, and vigorous writing styles that become the subject of aesthetic reflection. Thus, we see a pluralization, historization, and individualization of style, a process which opens up new scopes of literary and cultural theory. Within socio-theoretical discourses, for instance, style is discussed as a linguistic index for political and cultural community. Related to this is a growing awareness of the waywardness of languages which becomes apparent in the reflection on translation. Problems of transmission, which also become relevant to the exchange between different medial formations (e.g. text/music, spoken language/written language), are also part of the discourse on style. The conference explores these movements between languages, literatures, media, and semantic fields by opening up European horizons of comparison and connecting literary studies and linguistics.
