Philatelie als Kulturwissenschaft
Weltaneignung im Miniaturformat
[Philately as Cultural Studies. World Appropriation in Miniature Form]
Stamps are small paper objects that states provide to regulate correspondence. But how do numbers, fonts, and pictures become graphic works of art that fascinate collectors and many others? In what way do they represent a country, its society and culture? And what role do they play in the visual arts and in literature? The contributions to this volume attempt to answer these and other questions by using exemplary representations. Thus, they look beyond the traditional understanding of philately as a description of postage stamps and establish stamps as an integral part of cultural studies from a historical, political, and aesthetic point of view.
