The Dissident Library: Soviet Studies in the FRG: The Cultural Dimension
The next seminar of The Dissident Library will further engage with the topic discussed in the previous talk with Prof. Wolfgang Eichwede: the emergence of Soviet dissident studies in Germany. However, this seminar will take a broader approach: it is not specifically devoted to dissident studies, but to the study of unofficial Soviet culture in general. How did this field emerge in the FRG? What determined the range of interests of professors at Freie Universität at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s? How did a field such as Russistics develop within Slavistics? Which topics were promoted, which conferences, journals, and individual publications proved indispensable? How was the study of unofficial culture influenced by the interest in structuralism and in binary oppositions (“official culture” vs. “unofficial culture”)? Is “culture and power” another such opposition? How has the formation of this field been influenced by available sources and the comparison of pre- and post-Stalinist literature? We will discuss these questions with Prof. Karl Eimermacher.

Следующий семинар Библиотеки инакомыслия продолжит тему, начатую профессором Вольфгангом Айхведе – возникновение советского диссидентства в Германии. Тема этого семинара, однако, будет шире: он посвящен не только диссидентству, но изучению неофициальной советской культуры в целом. Как возникло это направление в ФРГ? Что определяло круг интересов профессоров Свободного университета на рубеже 1950–1960-х годов? Как в рамках славистики развивалась русистика? Каким темам отдавали приоритет, какие конференции, журналы и публикации оказались значимыми? Как на изучение неофициальной культуры повлиял интерес к структурализму, к бинарным оппозициям («официальная культура» vs. «неофициальная культура»), можно ли рассматривать «культуру и власть» также как такую оппозицию? Как на формирование этого поля повлияли доступные источники, сравнение до- и послесталинской литературы? Эти вопросы мы обсудим с профессором Карлом Аймермахером.
